Owner and Senior Guide
James Kiptoo (Kip) was born and raised in a remote village on the western rim of Kenya’s Great Rift Valley. As an adult, he has traveled extensively throughout Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, and he thrives on sharing the experience of nature. His knowledge of the natural world is impressive, and he is a specialist in the birds of East Africa.
As a schoolboy, Kip tended domestic animals, and the largest wild animal he spotted was a hare!
But birds were plentiful and kindled his interest in nature. During primary school, Kip enrolled in Scouts, went on his first camping trip, and fell in love with the outdoors. During secondary school, he joined the Wildlife Club, realized that nature was in his blood, and chose nature as a career.
He enrolled in tour guide training and earned a certificate that enables him to offer car hire and rental, air charter and cruise, reservations and bookings, camping, tour planning, and guiding for wildlife viewing. After further training with the Kenya Wildlife Service, Kip was awarded a certificate in sanctuary management. He has volunteered in various departments of the National Museum of Kenya and trained as a Kenya Museum Society guide.
Since 1998, Kip has been a member of Nature Kenya (East Africa Natural History Society) for which he leads birdwatching and general tours as well as guided tree walks at the Nairobi Arboretum (with Friends of Nairobi Arboretum). Kip bands birds with the Nairobi Ringing Group, contributes to the African Waterfowl Census, and participates in World Birdwatch (an international event coordinated by Bird Life International).
Kip has vast experience with local safari companies based in Nairobi, and he has guided tourists from Israel, Spain, the United States, Canada, The Netherlands, and many other countries. He is fluent in English, Kiswahili, and Kalenjin, and he has basic skills in French and Dutch.
Kip is extremely happy to be a “Bush Teacher,” and he is eager to share his keen eye and wealth of knowledge with you.
